Welcome
There are about 10 000 lakes and artificial water bodies with slow water circle within the territory of Belarus which are negatively affected by anthropogenic activity. This requires integrated research for estimating the environmental state of water resources in Belarus, in order to give recommendations and guidelines for the optimal use and protection of inland waters. The project will adopt the integration of decision–support tools and methods to manage information from various sources and to enhance decision-making through modelling and mapping hum an activities (agricultural activity etc), in particular those related to eutrophication of water ecosystems of Belarus. In particular the main objectives of the project proposal are:
- to promote the knowledge and the application of Integrate Water Resources Management (IWRM) principles and techniques to the Belarus environmental needs, according to the EU standards;
- to transfer knowledge and advanced techniques of environmental analysis and management, contributing to the training of professionals from Belarus;
- to develop and apply Decision Support Systems (DSS) for IWRM, in order to help the Belorussian Governmentto prepare feasible plans for IWRM;
- to contribute to the overall acquisition of the EU standards by Belarus in the field of environmental resources management.
The project will develop and apply the most advanced techniques of environmental analysis, as numerical models, multi-criteria analysis, GIS and remote sensing methods. The use of social and environmental indicators according to the DPSIR scheme in respect with the most accepted principles of environmental analysis and according to the European standards and normative related to environmental assessment and territorial planning (EIA and SEA Directives, WFD, etc). The project will be coordinated by the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste (donor) having the Central Research Institute for Complex Use of Water Resources as partner (recipient).
